Putting the wrong thing in a skip bin is the fastest way to turn a cheap job into an expensive one. A contaminated load gets charged at a higher rate, and some items cannot be transported at all.
Here is the honest list.
Goes in without a problem
- General household and office waste
- Timber, plasterboard and building offcuts
- Furniture, mattresses and whitegoods
- Green waste, branches, prunings and soil
- Bricks, concrete, tiles and rubble — in a heavy waste bin
- Scrap metal
Cannot go in, no exceptions
- Asbestos in any form — this is a licensed removal job
- Paint, chemicals, oils and solvents
- Gas bottles and pressurised cylinders
- Car batteries and tyres
- Wet concrete or liquid waste
- Food waste and anything that rots
Asbestos is the one to take seriously
Any Victorian house built before the late 1980s may contain asbestos, commonly in eaves, fences, bathroom sheeting and old vinyl flooring. It cannot go in a skip bin under any circumstances. If you suspect it, stop and get it tested. Licensed removal costs money, but handling it wrong is a health risk and carries serious penalties.
Why a clean load is cheaper
A bin holding only green waste, or only concrete, goes straight to the right processor with no sorting. A mixed load has to be separated by hand at the transfer station, which costs more, and that cost gets passed on.
If you can keep materials separate, do. If you cannot, that is fine too — just tell us when you book so the quote is right the first time.
