Green waste is the cheapest bin we do, and the reason is simple: a clean load of garden material goes straight to composting with no sorting at all. Keep it clean and you get the lower rate.
What counts as green waste
- Branches, prunings and hedge trimmings
- Lawn clippings and leaves
- Weeds and pulled-out shrubs
- Soil and clean dirt
- Small tree stumps — ring us first about size
What turns it into a mixed load
One bag of household rubbish reclassifies the entire bin as mixed waste at the higher rate. So do plastic plant pots, treated pine, painted timber, and rocks or concrete mixed in with the soil.
It feels harsh, but the transfer station cannot sort a composting load by hand. One contaminated item and the whole thing has to go through general waste processing.
Soil is heavier than it looks
A bin full of soil hits its weight limit long before it looks full. If you are digging out garden beds or levelling a yard, you want a smaller bin with a higher weight rating rather than a big one you cannot fill. Tell us it is soil when you book and we will send the right bin.
Timing matters in Victoria
Green waste demand spikes twice a year — spring growth, and again before summer when everyone clears around the house for fire season. If you are in a bushfire-prone area, book earlier than you think you need to. Those weeks get busy across the whole industry, not just with us.
